On 9/11, Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Art Spiegelman (creator of “Maus”) was in the immediate vicinity of Ground Zero, fleeing the crumbling World Trade Center with his family. He wrote In the Shadow of No Towers to illustrate the first-hand horror of that day, and the grief and disillusionment which followed.

Inspired by Spiegelman’s book, guitarist/composer Marco Cappelli transforms it into a multi-media production. Actor John Turturro, a quintessential New Yorker, narrates the English version (the original Italian version is also included with actor Enzo Salomone) accompanied by the music of Sintax Error, fusing modern classical, rock, jazz, country and cartoon music.

The combination of all of these talents makes In the Shadow of No Towers a revelatory experience; its sorrow, confusion and rage all familiar to those who have followed the turmoil of the last ten years, but managing to surprise with its richness and variety of feeling.

Special Features:

• 5.1 Surround (Dolby and DTS) and dedicated stereo mix options.
• Complete original Italian version narrated by actor Enzo Salomone.

In The Shadow Of No Towers

This Sunday, September 11th, 2011, is the tenth anniversary of an event that many will never forget, no matter where you are from; a sad day of destruction that took place in New York City, not far from DMG’s present location in Chinatown. Art Spiegelman, the great underground comix-cartoonist and creator of Maus, did the original ‘graphic novel’ on which this DVD is based. Spiegelman shows us other events that took place on September 11th in previous years from old newspaper headlines showing how violence continues to haunt the 20th century. Spiegelman's loft was close to the twin towers, so these are first-hand memories. It took Art a long time to come to grips with what had happened as it did for any of us that were not so far away from the death and destruction. Spiegelman does a great job of recreating the terror he felt as he searched for his daughter at a nearby school while the towers burned and collapsed. The music created by Sintax Error fits these images perfectly, stirring up feelings of terror, hopelessness and destruction. Spiegelman questions the large amount of American flag waving that went on after the event as well as the scare tactics of Homeland Security. Some things never change. The nightmarish feelings and thoughts linger as we all try to find our way through the confusion of what has happened. The queasy feeling many of us had inside remains, certain things can never be fully resolved. Perhaps this Sunday would be an appropriate time to watch this DVD. It is said that time heals all wounds. I hope so since the pain is still with many of us. I feel exhausted. Time to rest.
