Ensemble Sospeso

Mode Records - A Record Label Devoted to New Music Ensemble Sospeso

In 1998, the Ensemble Sospeso made its Carnegie Hall debut at Weill Recital Hall to public and critical lauds, and shortly afterwards received the first of consecutive Föderpreis awards from the prestigious Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung to examine and celebrate the rich repertoire of chamber orchestra music written since 1960. Since then it has established itself as a leading voice in its generation of contemporary performers, with concerts described by the press as "glorious" (New York Times), "exquisite" (Los Angeles Times), "a wonder to watch" (Wall Street Journal), "one of New York's best and brightest" (New Yorker).

Formed by composers Joshua Cody and Kirk Noreen, Sospeso has performed concerts nationwide, appearing at Alice Tully Hall (with Pierre Boulez), Carnegie Hall's Making Music series (under Esa-Pekka Salonen), the Lincoln Center Festival, Works & Process at the Guggenheim Museum, the Film Society of Lincoln Center, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Miller Theater at Columbia University. The musicians of Sospeso are 21 virtuoso soloists drawn from some 13 different countries.

Sospeso collaborates closely with composers, often dedicating an entire evening to a single composer's music. The ensemble has worked personally with major composers including Pierre Boulez, Elliott Carter, Marc-André Dalbavie, Brian Ferneyhough, Helmut Lachenmann, Anne LeBaron, Tristan Murail, Olga Neuwirth, Bernard Rands, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Howard Shore, Julia Wolfe, and Christian Wolff, among others. Sospeso's commitment to interdisciplinary projects, especially film, has resulted in collaborations with major filmmakers, poets, and other artists.
