Essential Music Essential Music is an ensemble of flexible instrumentation which has since 1987 presented over 100 premieres by composers of our time, as well as historically important performances of lost or neglected works by Ashley, Beyer, Cage, Cardew, Cowell, Russell, Varèse, and others. The group has performed at nearly every important musical venue in New York, from uptown at Lincoln Center and the 92nd Street Y, to downtown at The Kitchen and Experimental Intermedia. Essential Music has appeared at festivals worldwide including the Lincoln Center Festival, the Aspekte Salzburg Festival, the Zurich June Festival, the Spoleto Festival USA, and the Kanagawa Arts Festival.
